Message from the President

Dear Members of the Northern Kentucky Skating Family,

WOW! We have accomplished a lot since our last newsletter. Blues, Brews and Southern Foods, Skaters for Kids and Work at the Rink Weekend were all huge successes. Thank you to Charlotte Markovich, Whitney O’Neal, Deirdre Temizer, Mike Stallings, Jessie Miller, Ian Moram, Joanna Skeen, Denise Simoni, Lisa Chastain, Pamela Drake and all the many volunteers and contributors that made these events so fantastic. It is amazing how well our members pull together and work as a team. We truly are a community and a family.

SEGL is right around the corner, February 22-24. We will need your help once again to make this the most hospitable and best competition ever. We want to let all our visitors know how special we are. Be sure to be friendly and to join us for the pizza party on Friday night from 7-9 pm at the Holiday Inn. More information follows in this newsletter, or contact Pamela Drake about how you can be a part of this huge accomplishment for our Club.

As always the Board welcomes your input or questions either at a meeting or to one of us directly. Our next meeting is March 12 in the Donato’s Pizza Group Room located on Dixie Highway in Crestview Hills.

Hope to see you at the next Club Ice and SEGL,

Clare Richart
President

Club Ice and Golden Skate Team Challenge

February Club Ice

Skaters showed their LOVE for the ice at the February Club Ice! Skaters in Valentine colors took the ice for a couple of hours of fun, and enjoyed a spaghetti dinner with valentine cupcakes and cookies. The team with the most members who wore Valentine colors was the Twizzlers, so they earned a point toward the Golden Skate Team Challenge!

"Joy to the World" Brought Joy to the Kids

The Northern Kentucky Skating Club’s annual holiday charity exhibition, Skaters for Kids, was a huge success!

The Show, titled "Joy to the World," was held on December 8, 2007, and brought Christmas joy to the children of Lincoln Elementary School in Dayton, Kentucky. We were able to present a wide assortment of toys to the children of Lincoln Elementary this year, and will be providing a generous check. Several children from the school attended the exhibition and enjoyed a meet-and-greet reception with the skaters after the show.

Thanks to all the volunteers who put in countless hours, the skaters who entertained the crowd, the coaches who worked behind the scenes, and all those who attended and gave so generously! Mark your calendars for next year - the exhibition will be on December 8, 2008.

Blues, Brews & Southern Foods - Rock the Rink

Blues, Brews and Southern Foods, a fundraising/social event held on November 3, 2007, was an enormous success and was enjoyed by all! For the first time ever, figure skating families joined hockey families for a social event that ultimately benefits all skaters and the rink. Charlotte Markovich and Whitney O’Neal did an outstanding job organizing the event; Mike Stallings, chef extraordinaire, prepared a mouthwatering Southern-style meal; Deirdre Temizer assembled a wonderful variety of silent auction items; and many volunteers contributed time and energy to make this event so memorable! It is expected that this event will become an annual function, so be looking for information next fall and make plans to join us on November 8, 2008.

The event was successful at raising funds for our rink improvements, and under Charlotte Markovich’s direction, many volunteers have contributed countless hours to “Rock the Rink!” Some recent improvements include repainted locker rooms, training center, hallways, and bathrooms; new flooring on the warm side; and updated bathrooms on the cold side. Thanks to everyone who has volunteered time and energy to this effort!

Join Us for SEGL Pizza and Movie Night

The 2008 SEGL Pizza and Movie Night is open to all competitors and their families! Plan to join us in giving our SEGL Competitors and families a warm Northern Kentucky Skating Club welcome!

Please join us for a night of fun and getting to know your fellow competitors! Sign up sheets for the Pizza Party will be available at the competition registration desk at the rink.

Regional, Sectional and National Competitors

Congratulations to Christina G - 2008 U.S. Figure Skating Championships

Northern Kentucky Skating Club’s own Christina G. had the thrill of competing at the 2008 U.S. National Figure Skating Championships January 20-27 in St. Paul, Minnesota. Coming into the competition, she was the top-scoring Sectional finalist in the Ladies Novice division. Her coach, Stephanie Miller, said Christina is "a smart and disciplined competitor who has made tremendous strides in the past year, particularly in her jumps." In addition to her own competition, Christina and her family were able to see the other top U.S. figure skaters in competition.

Christina is a 13-year-old eighth-grader at Sycamore Junior High. She dreams of attending Harvard, pursuing a career in sports medicine and winning an Olympic gold medal in figure skating. When she’s not on the ice or in school, she enjoys music, reading, and hanging out with her friends.

Congratulations to our Regional, Sectional and National Competitors

SEGL Competition

It's almost time for us to host the SEGL competition! How exciting for us to host the competition, and for our skaters to compete in their home environment!

NKSC needs volunteers to make this work. Whether you can volunteer for an hour, a day, a weekend, or anything in-between, we can use you!

This is a great way to meet other skating parents, see how a competition works, and not need to get a hotel room for a competition.

Please email, or call, and let us know when you can help. We won't schedule any volunteers to work during a time their skater is skating, so we won't have an exact schedule until all events are scheduled. We will have two meetings to accommodate volunteers, to explain the volunteer positions, and answer any questions.

Please contact Pamela Drake, the Volunteer Coordinator, at pamela57@fuse.net, with the times you are available to work the competition. Friends and neighbors are also welcome to help.

You may also contact Mark Chastain at mark.chastain@duke-energy.com, or Clare Richart, at mainelycwr@aol.com with any questions.

What is SEGL?

What is SEGL? The letters S E G L stand for Southern Eastern Great Lakes Figure Skating Council. It is an association of skating clubs within the Eastern Great Lakes region from Kentucky, Southern Ohio, Indiana Tennessee, Alabama and Mississippi. The Council was "formed for the purpose of encouraging all types of figure skating" and "to encourage and cultivate a spirit of fraternal feeling within the Council."

Every year SEGL sponsors a non-qualifying competition through one of its member clubs. In the past two years, the competition has been held in Troy, Ohio, and Louisville, Kentucky.

Last year our club applied to host the competition in 2008, and we successfully won the bid! The competition will be held at the Northern Kentucky Ice Center on February 22-24, 2008.
