Message from the President

Dear Members of the Northern Kentucky Skating Family,

Another successful summer is behind us. Hopefully, all the skaters worked hard and had fun. We are looking forward to a busy and exciting year for our Club with our hosting of SEGL in February and our Golden Skate Team Challenge.

As you may have already heard, our club was awarded the South Eastern Great Lakes Competition. For those who are new to this competition, this is a yearly competition that is hosted by different skating clubs within SEGL. As you might imagine this will be a large undertaking for our club. “Why,” you might ask, “would we want to host it?” First of all it gives our club valuable experience and a proven track record. Should we bid on another competition, we can show that our club is up to the task. Secondly, competitions are a way for clubs to make money. If our club can be successful doing this, we would be able to lower our fundraising fees, something everyone would like.

Our efforts to prepare and host the competition are going to be in three phases.

First is the fundraising phase. We are planning to host Blues, Brews & Southern Foods on November 3rd at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Crescent Springs. Be sure to mark your calendars and reserve the date. Besides the above we will be drawing the winner of our split the pot raffle and holding an auction. Look for more details in this newsletter. It should be a great evening with wonderful entertainment, with all profits going to a worthy cause.

Next is “the getting the rink ready” phase. Charlotte Markovich is heading up the committee in charge of this. They are asking everyone to plan on contributing some elbow grease over the Christmas holiday. There will be more details to follow.

Lastly, there is the competition itself. The competition is Friday, February 22, through Sunday, February 24, with practice ice possibly starting on Thursday. At the General Members Meeting in October we will have sign ups for various jobs during the competition. Realizing that no one will want to work while their child is competing, we will not assign shifts until we have the skating order.

Mark Chastain and I are cochairin the competition. We have found people to chair most of the committees, although we are still looking for a few people to help in soliciting sponsors. We are going to need everyone’s help to host a successful competition. Please let one of us or a Board Member know if you are interested and would possibly be available.

As if this wasn’t enough to keep everyone busy, at the June picnic the Club announced its first ever Golden Skate Team Challenge. This will be a fun year-long event culminating in the awarding of the Golden Skate team trophy at the May Club Ice. Visit Blades Pro Shop to see the trophy. We randomly divided the skaters into two teams, the Twizzlers lead by Mary Seigel, and the Mighty Mohawks lead by Nathan Chastain. Throughout the year, especially at Club Ice, there will be opportunities for the two teams to earn points. Watch the bulletin board and web site for more information.

This leads me to the next piece of information I would like to pass along, and that is where to find out what’s going on. Our Club uses four venues to pass along information to its members. They are the newsletter, the bulletin board, club-wide emails and this web site.

As always the Board welcomes your input or questions either at a meeting or to one of us directly. Our next meeting is October 10 in the Donato’s Pizza Group Room located on Dixie Highway in Crestview Hills.

Hope to see you at the Club Picnic and General Members Meeting,
Clare Richart
President

Help Me Help You -- NKSC Fundraising

My name is Sharon Sanford, and I will be helping you meet your fundraising and dues requirement for the year. All of the money we raise between now and May 2008 will be applied to those obligations.

I have raised funds through several means in the past 15 years for sports and other organizations. I have wrapped packages at Barnes & Noble, worked Reds games, gone door to door, sold candy in front of various stores, organized raffles - to name a few of the ways we raised small funds (under $200 per person). NKSC has participated in the ones listed below at the request of members.

Please take a moment to answer a few questions to get me started. "I have plenty of money and am not interested in fundraising" is also a wonderful answer!

Please email me with your fundraising thoughts or questions. My email address is Shasanfo@Yahoo.com.

  1. Might you participate in Scrips?
  2. Which months are best for you? Do you prefer more frequent ordering to spread the cash flow or do you prefer one or two big orders during the year?
  3. Do you like Yankee candle sales?
  4. Do you like Little Caesars Pizza sales?
  5. Do you like candy sales?
  6. Any suggestions?

We will be doing two Scrips orders in time for Christmas. More information to follow. Please, let me know what you would participate in. Each organization has a minimum.

Thank you,
Sharon

Skaters for Kids 2007 - Holiday Charity Exhibition

The Northern Kentucky Skating Club is pleased to announce the theme for our annual Skaters for Kids holiday charity exhibition: “Joy To the World.” The Show is scheduled for Saturday, December 8, time to be announced. This year’s holiday show will once again benefit the children of Lincoln Elementary School in Dayton, Kentucky.

Last year, we were able to present an estimated $2400 worth of toys, along with a check for over $1000 to the children of Lincoln Elementary, and they were overwhelmed by our generosity. This year, we hope to surpass last year’s amounts. Please mark your calendar now for this special date and plan to participate and volunteer for this worthy cause.

Silent Auction Items Needed

ATTENTION MEMBERS! We are busy getting ready for our Blues, Brews & Southern Foods Fundraising event! We will have some silent auction items for bidding, and the coaches are coming up with some very fun ideas to offer for bidding. We are asking our membership if you have any of the following that you might donate:

Could you donate...

...tickets to a sporting event

...a week in a vacation home/time share that you could donate (at a mutually-agreed upon time)

...any skating items of interest

...themed baskets

...gift certificates

...anything fun or interesting

We would love to have your donations.

Please send ideas to our Silent Auction Chairperson, Deirdre Temizer, temizer@fuse.net.

Summer Fun

The NKSC planned some fun this summer! During the first week of summer school, we had a cake to welcome everyone. In July, we announced the Golden Skate Team Challenge teams and had pizza for lunch. In August, we had a cookout to end summer school with games and the passing out of team T-shirts to the TWIZZLERS and the MIGHTY MOHAWKS.

During September Club Ice, the theme was “Early Fall Fling” and club members enjoyed fun and games including face painting, balloon carry, obstacle course, and target slide. Both teams earned 2 points each! Hot dogs, brats, veggies, apples, and cake were served as well.

The NKSC also held a Sendoff Celebration for Regionals Skaters!
