Dear Members of the Northern Kentucky Skating Family:
We are pleased to present you with the first edition of our long awaited and much needed newsletter. Our goal is to keep you up to date about what is happening in the figure skating community at our rink. We hope you will find our newsletter both informative and useful. In order to insure that we cover what is important to you, we will need your help. Please contact either Mary Jones, Newsletter Editor, or Mark Chastain, Communication Chair, with any information you would like published or questions you would like answered.
I would also like to remind everyone that all NKSC members are invited to our monthly board meetings. The board greatly values members' input. The dates, times and locations will be posted on the bulletin board and in the newsletter. If there is an issue you would like brought up before the board or you would like to present a proposal to the board, please contact me so I can include it in the next meeting's agenda.
Lastly, I would like to give a heartfelt thank you to Mary Jones for putting this newsletter together. Her hard work is greatly appreciated.
Respectfully,
Clare Richart
Interim President

Jessica V. is a high beginner level skater and coached by JoAnna Skeen. She enjoys the Salchow jump and Sit spin and is working on her Lutz jump. Jessica likes to skate because she likes the feel of the wind in her hair. She likes being with her friends too. Her favorite competitions are Skate Nashville and Skate Cincinnati. Jessica is nine years old and in the 4th grade. She has a cat, a dog, and three gerbils (wow). Her favorite movie is "Spongebob Squarepants" and her favorite TV show is "That's So Raven." She likes to collect bouncy balls and marbles; she has eight-four so far!! You can read more about Jessica V. on the NKSC bulletin board.
If you have been watching our free style sessions lately, you may notice many of our skaters working hard on polishing up their programs. They are preparing for the 2006 Eastern Great Lakes Regionals. Our skaters will have the opportunity to compete against other skaters from our region with the hopes of winning a qualifying position to Junior Nationals (Juvenile and Intermediate levels) and Sectionals (Novice, Junior and Senior levels).
Regionals will begin Wednesday, October 26, and conclude Saturday, October 29, 2005. The hosting club is ISC of Indianapolis with the events taking place at the Carmel Ice Skadium in Carmel, Indiana. You can find updated schedules on ISC's website at www.skateisci.org. Results of each event should be posted on Don Korte's website at www.sk8stuff.com.
The following skaters from the NKSC are competing this year: Gabrielle Barker, Jordan Brauninger, Carol Ann Burge, Taylor Galonski, Christine Gao, Natasha Guffy, Jennifer Henderson, Stephanie Henderson, Stephanie Jones, Sarah Louise, Carolena Malloy, Natasha Records, Chrissy Richart, Jessie Sabatka, Mary Siegel, Anna Simoni, Maria Simoni, Michalah Thorn, and Briana Ulanowski.
Best of Luck to Everyone!!!!

The Northern Kentucky Ice Center's second fall "Learn to Skate" sessions will begin Monday, October 24. The cost for the six-week session of classes is $75. Times include one half hour of class and one half hour of practice. The registration fee also includes skate rental and six public session passes. Classes are available Monday through Thursday and Saturday. For more information, pick up a brochure at the NKIC office or call 859-344-1981 ext. 0.
Once again, the NKSC will host their annual winter skating exhibition. As in the past, all profits are given to a designated charity. It's a wonderful opportunity for our skaters and the patrons of the exhibition to give back to the community and share their talents along with their generosity in bringing a Happy Holiday Season to someone in need. The exhibition has been named NKSC PRESENTS: "SKATERS FOR KIDS 2005" to reflect the purpose of this annual event.
This year our donation will be given to the Thomas Edison Elementary School in Covington, Kentucky. The students are from one of the poorest areas of Covington, and the school's budget relies heavily on donated items and grants. The school is excited and hoping to have transportation available for their children so they can come and watch our show. In addition to our skaters, the Oxford Skating Club's USFS Open Junior Synchronized Skating Team has graciously accepted our invitation to participate in the exhibition.
The exhibition will take place at the Northern Kentucky Ice Center on Friday, December 9, 2005, 5:30 - 7 pm. Admission will be a Christmas item (book/toy) age-appropriate for a child in grades K-5 and/or a cash donation. There is no registration fee to participate in the show; however, since this is our charity fundraiser, all participating skaters are asked to bring a donation for the children of Thomas Edison Elementary School. Each participating skater will receive a free show T-shirt. A small reception will be held after the show on the warm side of the rink so the children and guests may meet our skaters.
As with any function, we are in need of volunteers to help make this event a success. A volunteer needs list can be downloaded, and a sign-up sheet will be posted on the NKSC bulletin board as well as in the exhibition registration packet. If you are not able to donate your time and would like to help, we are in need of materials for the show. A show items needs list can be downloaded and will also be included in the packet. You may purchase extra show T-shirts when you register. Download the show registration form, or pick up a registration packet underneath the NKSC bulletin board or in the NKIC office. Deadline for all forms is Monday, October 31, 2005. Please contact Gretchen Reisner at 859-344-1981, ext. 0, or Denise Simoni at 859-426-0376 with any questions.
Brianna Berry!! Brianna was recently in the Cincinnati Ballet's first production of the season, "A Midsummer Night's Dream." She danced the role of a Sprite in a magical forest. The show ran September 23-25 at the Cincinnati Aronoff Center.
Brianna recently auditioned, along with hundreds of other children from the Tri-State area, for a part in the Cincinnati Ballet's "The Nutcracker." She just found out she has been invited to be one of the sixteen Ginger Kid roles. You can see Brianna dance at Music Hall when "The Nutcracker" performs December 16-26. Times are listed on the Cincinnati Ballet's website.
Lisa and Mike are very excited for their daughter to have this incredible opportunity to be a member of the cast, work with the professional dancers from the Cincinnati Ballet, and to be a part of the performances. Although, when they ask Brianna which she prefers, ballet versus skating, she answers every time without hesitation, "I love to dance but I love ice skating more.".
Brianna, along with your parents, we are proud of your accomplishments. Best of Luck to you!!!

Still need ways to pay your fundraising? Don't forget the Holiday Scrips Sale. The Scrips sale will occur in the month of November 2005. Scrips are gift cards and paper certificates worth their face value. Scrips are offered for hundreds of retail and service providers you frequent everyday - from gas stations and restaurants to department stores and hair salons. Each company gives back a certain percentage of the gift card/certificate. For example, if you purchase a $50 gift card for the Gap through the NKSC Scrips program, Gap will donate 9% to your fundraising obligation, and your card is worth the $50 you paid for it. This is a great idea for holiday shopping! Forms will soon be available at the rink, or download a copy from the fundraising page.
Remember, Kroger Grocery Certificates are available year-round. Forms are available in the NKIC office and on the fundraising page. The great thing about these certificates is that you can pick them up at the office in just a few days after turning in your form.
For those of you who ordered Yankee Candle products, orders should be in between October 17 and October 31. Whitney O'Neal will notify the sellers of pick-up times.
The next newsletter should be out in December. Please send any information or questions to Mary Jones or Mark Chastain by Friday, November 18.
