Dear Members of the Northern Kentucky Skating Family:
LET IT SNOW. LET IT SNOW. LET IT SNOW ... Northern Kentucky Ice Center is getting some HEAT. The rink has purchased and upgraded the heat in locker rooms 2 and 3, the concession stands and the training center. They have asked Northern Kentucky Skating Club to help by purchasing the equipment to heat the stands and the judges' box. In exchange for purchasing the equipment, the club will receive ice time for our spring shows over the next few years as well as the opportunity to make money through the concession stand and the heaters themselves.
At the January Board meeting, the board unanimously agreed to help. Having adequate heat benefits our club in so many ways besides making it more comfortable for parents, coaches and skaters on a daily basis. It will limit lost ice time caused by frozen pipes. It will make it easier for us to get judges, hold shows and maybe even host a competition. Competitions are great fundraising opportunities. A win-win proposition!
Even though we are in the midst of winter, spring is only a few months away. Work has already begun on our spring show. The dates have been changed to May 13 and May 14. The show should be fantastic, as always, but we need your help. The more performers and volunteers we get, the better the show will be. Each family will receive a packet with more information along with entry forms and volunteer sign-ups.
As always, the board welcomes your input or questions either at a meeting or to one of us directly. Our next two meetings are on February 14 and March 14 at 6:30 pm. They will be held in the Donato's Pizza Group Room on Dixie Highway in Crestview Hills.
Respectfully,
Clare Richart
President

The next NKIC Learn To Skate session begins Monday, February 13. Save $10 by registering before Monday, February 6. Classes have been filling up, and space is limited. Don't miss out on the fun, and register early. Pick up a brochure and registration form at our front office.
The holidays have come and gone, and it is time to spring forward to the Spring Show. The theme this year is "Satellite Radio," and every number will be a different channel. We're excited about this year's show because not only will we have the talent from our own skaters, Stephanie and Hugh's daughter, Jessica, and her pair partner Ian will be making the trip down from Vancouver to star in the show. They placed seventh at Canadian Nationals this year, and got everyone excited with their throw Quadruple Salchow.
We have also contacted NKSC skaters who have moved on to college and jobs to come back and skate an "alumni" number. The coaches will be putting a little number together that we hope everyone can laugh at. We would love to have even more skaters then we did for the Winter Exhibition (which was record-breaking) to help make this show our best so far! The show dates have been changed to May 13 and May 14. There will be two shows on Saturday from 3:30 to 5:30 pm and again from 7 to 9 pm. The Sunday show will be from 3:30 to 5:30 pm. We are expecting sold-out performances, so be sure to buy your tickets early. Entry form packets will be out soon. Meanwhile if you have any questions, please contact Gretchen Reisner, Show Director, or Joanna Skeen, Show Co-Director at 859-344-1981 x. 8; Whitney O'Neal, Show Chair, at whitandtodd@fuse.net or Denise Simoni, Show Co-Chair, at dacfs@aol.com.
Preparations are under way to make this year's spring show event, "Satellite Radio," our best ever! But we need your help to make it happen. Traditionally, we ask for program ads to help us defray our printing costs. We are excited to introduce a new category this year, the "Skatergram." Skatergrams are a great way to show your support for the skater(s) in your life. For $ 5, you can send a personalized message to your own special skater(s)! Or promote your own business with a program ad. Skatergrams and ad sizes/fees are listed below. We have kept our fees the same as last year. Forms will be included with your information packet. Please contact Denise Simoni at dacfs@aol.com for questions or additional forms. All ads/skatergrams must be received by April 10, 2006. Thank you for your continued support!

The 2006 Winter Olympics host city is Torino, Italy. Torino is located in northwest Italy at the base of the Italian Alps. With a population of about 868,000, Torino is the fourth largest city in Italy behind Rome, Milan and Naples. The Olympic flag made its debut at the 1920 Olympic Games in Antwerp, Belgium. At the end of each Olympic Games, the mayor of the host city presents the flag to the mayor of the next host city. It's then placed at their town hall for four years until the Opening Ceremony of their Olympic Games. The five rings represent the five major regions of the world: Africa, the Americas, Asia, Europe and Oceania. Every national flag in the world includes at least one of the five colors, which are (from left to right) blue, yellow, black, green and red.
Coverage of the Winter Olympics Games will be on NBC - Channel 5 Cincinnati. Go to www.nbcolympics.com and click "Figure Skating," then "Inside This Sport" to learn more about Olympic figure skating - the events, the elements and the history.

NKSC's Maria Simoni will attend the Presidential Classroom Scholars (PC) program, February 18-25, 2006, in Washington, D.C. She was invited to attend based on her academic achievements. It is an opportunity for students with special interests in government and public policy to go behind the scenes in Washington, D.C.
During the weeklong program, students interact with Washington insiders including members of Congress, presidential appointees, senior military officials, top business leaders and journalists. They observe the U.S. Congress in action, visit their congressional offices, and debate current issues with peers from the United States and abroad. They will have the opportunity to visit renowned sites of our nation's capital such as the U.S. Department of State and Arlington National Cemetery. Additional highlights of this program include a seminar on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives, Central Intelligence Agency briefings and foreign embassy visits. We wish Maria a safe and enjoyable trip.
Our "Skaters of the Month" for December 2005 and January 2006 were Katherine S., Taylor G. and Briana U.
Katherine S. was NKSC'S Skater for December. She is three years old, skates in "Tiny Tots" and has been skating for one year. Her coaches are "mom," Joanna, and Beth Melson. She enjoys working on swizzles and glides. Katherine likes to skate because she just does. She recently skated in Carmel Invitational. She has three cats and a dog. Her favorite movie is "Racing Stripes," and her favorite TV show is "Little Einsteins." She likes to eat spaghetti, and she is cute.
Taylor G. was one of our skaters for January. She has a black lab and four fish. She is 11 years old and skates at the Juvenile level, and her coaches are Stephanie Miller and Ted Masdea. Her favorite jump is the double flip and favorite spin is the mushroom spin. She is working on her double axel jump and her camel-back-camel spin. Taylor's favorite colors are pink and blue. When she is not skating, Taylor enjoys playing soccer. Her favorite TV show is "Drake and Josh," and her favorite movie is "Yours, Mine and Ours." She won first place at the 2006 Regionals.
Briana U. was our other skater for January. She is 14 years old and in ninth grade. She has a dog-named "Cosmo." She has been skating for nine years and currently competes at the Novice level. Her coaches are Stephanie Miller, Ted Masdea and Gretchen Reisner. When she skates, everything bad disappears and it makes her happy. She describes skating as "the best feeling is being on the ice." Briana's favorite jumps are the double loop and the double flip. Her favorite spin is the layback. She is currently working on her double axel and an outside edge camel spin. Her favorite TV show is "That 70's Show," and her favorite movie is "Oceans 11 or 12."
Don't forget to check the bulletin board and read about our skaters of the month for February and March. It's fun to see the pictures of our skaters along with their friends!
The Northern Kentucky Skating Club would like to help you sell those used boots and blades. We will advertise your items via the newsletter and web site for a non-refundable fee of $2 for each item being sold. If blades are attached to the boots and sold together at one price, it would be considered one item. Due to limited space, only the type of boot/blade, size, price, seller's name and phone number will be listed. Information (or questions) can be dropped off at the rink's front office in an envelope marked NKSC - SKATE AD, Attn: Board Member - Ken Jones, along with a check made payable to NKSC. Your items will be advertised in three consecutive newsletters as well as our web site for six months.
Hopefully we can help you clean out those closets along with helping skaters in need of skates and blades. Be sure to send your information in by Friday, March 17 to be advertised in the April/May newsletter.
We are pleased to report that the "Skaters For Kids 2005" charity exhibition was a success! Thanks to the generosity of our patrons and participants, we were able to present the children of the Thomas Edison Elementary School with an estimated $2100 worth of toys. In addition, last week we received two more additional cash donations totaling $300, which brought the total cash donation to $855, for a total of nearly $3,000 donated in toys and cash. Ms. Denise Dandridge-Brown, coordinator of the Thomas Edison Elementary School, was overwhelmed by your generosity and has reported back that as a result of your kindness, every child of the school was able to receive gifts and that the cash donations were able to help out their families in need over the holiday season. What a wonderful gift you all gave!
Our deepest thanks and appreciation to show director, Gretchen Reisner, who donated her time and talents, working tirelessly during a very busy time of year. We wish to thank our sponsors: Bob Evans Restaurants, Cinergy Foundation, Fifth-Third Bank, Group Effort Inc., Kremer's Market, Kroger-Silverlake, Lawrenceburg Main Street Inc. Winter Wonderland, NKIC, The Bank of Kentucky and the St. Luke's Hospitals for their generosity. And last, but certainly not least, our sincere thanks to all of the many volunteers who helped make all of this happen. We were thrilled with the outpouring of support from our members. Whether you donated your time, talent or materials needed, please know that your participation was so greatly appreciated! It is a group effort such as this that makes it a success for everyone. We could not have done it without your support. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
The Oxford Ice Crystals added another dimension to the show and were an absolute delight. We were so pleased that they were able to be a part of this event. To the skaters and coaching staff, thank you for a wonderful show! You were all great and continue to amaze us with your creativity and talent. The children of Thomas Edison were very impressed with your talents and thoroughly enjoyed meeting all of you at the post-show "meet and greet." The signed show shirt that was presented to Ms. Dandridge-Brown was proudly displayed outside of her office at the school. We hope you all had a wonderful holiday season and wish all of you the very best in 2006.
