Dear Members of the Northern Kentucky Skating Family:
I cannot believe December is here and the holidays are only weeks away. As in years past, NKSC marks the occasion by putting on a show or exhibition for charity. This year is no different. Your board, its committees, the coaches and skaters are working hard to put together a phenomenal holiday exhibition. More details follow in this newsletter.
On behalf of NKSC, I would like to give a warm welcome to over 20 new members to our club. They were all Basic Skills members who joined to be in Skaters For Kids 2005. They will certainly make our exhibition even better.
This past month the NKSC Board elected Mark Chastain as Vice President. Ken Ingoglia, who received the next highest number of votes at the election in June, has agreed to fill the board vacancy. Mark’s election and Ken’s addition will only enhance our board. "Congratulations" to Mark and "Welcome" to Ken.
January is the United States Figure Skating National Skating Month. We will be celebrating it during January’s Club Ice where there will be lots of fun activities. We will be inviting Learn To Skate families to join us. Check the bulletin board after December 15 for more details. It is a great opportunity to promote the sport of figure skating and our club.
As our club grows in numbers and spirit, the board has found that we need to review our by-laws and policies and to create budgets and planning strategies. I won’t bore you with the details here, but know that the board welcomes your input or questions either at a meeting or to one of us directly. Our next two meetings are on December 13 and January 10 at 6:30 pm. They will be held in the Donato’s Pizza Group Room located on Dixie Highway in Crestview Hills.
Lastly, on behalf of the NKSC Board, I would like to wish all the Northern Kentucky Skating Families the very best holidays.
Hope to see you at Skaters For Kids 2005,
Clare Richart
President

December 9th will soon be upon us!! Here are some last-minute reminders for skaters participating in the winter exhibition, "Skaters for Kids 2005." We ask that skaters please arrive no later than 30 minutes prior to show time. Skaters may be dropped off at the main entrance; however, we ask that all skaters and their family members please park in the parking lots adjacent to, and across from, the rink. We will need all available parking spaces in the rink parking lots for our show patrons. Locker room assignments will be posted in the rink. Skaters, please be ready and prepared by show time. We have a very full show and time schedule. We are excited some of the children from the Thomas Edison Elementary School will be in our audience.
All volunteers should have received a volunteer confirmation letter in their show information packet. If you did not, please contact volunteer coordinator, Hilda Malloy. If you offered to bring needed materials for the show, please bring your donations to the upper entrance lobby on Monday, December 5, between 11 am and 6:30 pm. Please remember to bring your unwrapped toy/book (grades K-5) or cash donation for the Thomas Edison Elementary School.
We are thrilled to have the Learn To Skate skaters along with the Oxford Skating Club’s Open Junior Synchronized Skating Team joining the NKSC skaters for this annual event. With the talent of over seventy skaters, this year’s exhibition promises to be packed with energy and excitement!!!! Be sure to tell your friends and family to join us on December 9 at 5:30 pm to watch these talented skaters usher in the holiday season.
Each family should have received a letter stating your balance still remaining for this year’s membership fundraising obligation. Due to bookkeeping and signing of summer application forms, the due date has been moved up to May 15.
The club will once again set up a table at the rink in mid May for our membership drive. To renew your membership for 2006–07, all fundraising for this year, along with next year’s fundraising and membership dues must be collected. Remember, we are migrating to fundraising at the beginning of the membership year, and for this year only you may carry any overages in fundraising money and apply it to next year’s obligation. Be sure to take advantage of any fundraising opportunities (SCRIPS, Kroger certificates, etc.) to help ease the amount due in May.
Be sure to check your holiday shopping list. The Holiday SCRIPS Sale is going on now. SCRIPS offer gift cards to hundreds of stores and restaurants. It’s a great fundraising opportunity and an excellent gift for friends and family who are a shopping challenge. A certain percentage of each gift card you purchase is donated back from the merchant. For example, if you purchase a $50 gift card from the Gap through the NKSC program, the Gap donates 9% to your fundraising obligation and your card is still worth the $50.00 you paid for it. You can download SCRIPS guidelines and order forms for pick up a form at the rink. Orders and payments are due on December 2nd. SCRIPS will be delivered December 9th.
The next NKSC test session will be held Friday, December 16. A new test application and testing fees are to be handed into the NKIC office no later than Friday, December 2. Test levels that will be able to be tested are Senior MIF and Freestyle as well as Pre-Silver Dances. Judges for this test session will be Jerry Shipley, Ruth Galbreath and Ardith Hamilton.
New guidelines and test fees will be implemented with this test session. A slight increase in some of the tests will bring our fees in line with other skating clubs. The hospitality fee was raised to help offset the costs of judges’ expense and ice time. Some other changes include:
Test applications must be filled out completely including the skater’s USFS number with their name written the same way it is on their USFS membership card. Parents and skaters are urged to carefully read over the new application form before filling it out and turning it in. Please remember to pick up your test results at the office approximately one week after the test session.
Any parent who would like to help out with a test session by donating and fixing food or by being a runner is more than welcome. Please feel free to contact Alice Bradner at 859-342-8791 or alicebradner@hotmail.com with any questions.
CONGRATULATIONS CHRISTINA G.!!! Christina placed 4th in the Intermediate Ladies Freeskate at the 2006 Eastern Great Lakes Regional Championship in October. She qualifies to compete at the 2006 U.S. Junior Championship that takes place November 28 thru December 3.
The competition is being held at the Promenade Ice Center in Westminster, Colorado. Approximately 360 skaters from nine regions around the country will compete at the National Championship in Juvenile and Intermediate Freeskate, Dance and Pairs. This is Christina’s second trip to the U.S. Junior Championships. Last year she competed in the Ladies Juvenile Freeskate. Congratulations Christina on your achievements and Best of Luck at Jr. Nationals!!!!
The Eleventh Annual Southern Eastern Great Lakes Figure Skating Council Competition will be hosted by the Louisville Skating Academy, February 24–26, 2006, at the Iceland Sports Complex in Louisville, Kentucky. Entry forms can be downloaded at www.skatelouisville.org under competitions and must be postmarked no later than January 15, 2006.
The new club directories are out. They were passed out at the General Members Meeting in October and the November Club Ice. If you did not receive one, please stop by the admissions table at the Skaters For Kids 2005 Exhibition. A club representative will be passing them out.
Thank you to everyone who participated in our November dress sale. We had a great turn out. A wide variety of items were offered to skaters of all ages.
Our dress sales are a wonderful opportunity for skaters and their parents to buy and/or sell new or slightly used skating apparel. If you are not familiar with how to participate in our dress sales, here are a few details. Two to three times a year, depending on requests, volunteers organize a dress sale. Signs are posted throughout the rink stating when the sale will take place. Any skating items you would like to sell should be brought to the rink no later than the day before the sale. Each item must have a tag on it with the seller’s name, price and size. A 10% fee from your total sales is given to the NKIC for use of their facility. The NKIC, NKSC, and any volunteers organizing the sales are not responsible for lost tags or items. Once the sale is over, any money due and/or items not sold will be returned to you.
We also try to place an order for slightly discounted "new" skating tights. Savings are greater if the tights are bought in packs of three. Money is collected when the order is turned in and the skater receives their tights in approximately two weeks. It’s a great way to stock up for the summer skating sessions, upcoming competitions and shows. Be sure to keep your old dresses and skates and bring them in to our next sale.
**Tights from the last dress sale should arrive by December 7. Mary Jones will contact anyone who ordered tights when she receives them.
Our training harness has been fixed thanks to the Northern Kentucky Skating Club, who bought the parts. A special thank you to Jeff Lay who volunteered his time to install the parts and fixed the harness. Our skaters are now back jumping from the ropes and looking good. Thanks again Jeff!!!!
